I-797C notice of action: what your receipt notice says
What an I-797C notice of action says line by line, how it differs from the other I-797 notices, and what to do next for each kind.

The short answer
An I-797C is a USCIS . Most often it is your receipt: proof USCIS has your filing, not an approval 12. It can reject a filing, move your file, or set a biometrics appointment or interview 12. Check the receipt number, names and dates, then do what it asks 2. For most work permit renewals filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025, it does not prove you can work 10.
Key points
- The I-797C does several jobs: receipt, rejection, transfer, appointment, reopening. The I-797C carries a header saying it grants no status or benefit 2.
- A receipt number is three letters and ten digits. Enter it without dashes in Case Status Online 34.
- A receipt for most work permit renewals filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025 states it is not evidence of work authorization 10.
What is an I-797C?
Form I-797 is a notice USCIS sends you. It is not a form you fill out 1. The “C” version is the catch-all 12.
USCIS uses it to confirm or reject a filing, transfer files, schedule or reschedule and interviews, reopen cases, and take other actions 12.

Since April 2, 2012 it has carried this header: “THIS NOTICE DOES NOT GRANT ANY IMMIGRATION STATUS OR BENEFIT” 2.
Some agencies may accept it as supporting evidence. But it only shows that a request was submitted. USCIS has not decided whether you qualify 2.
USCIS says to read the notice carefully, because ignoring its instructions might delay your case 2.
What does an I-797C receipt notice say, line by line?
USCIS doesn’t publish one official layout, and the boxes change between notice versions 2. Below is a made-up sample. Its receipt number is fake on purpose.

What do the letters and digits in a receipt number mean?
A is a 13-character ID that USCIS gives each application or petition it receives. It is three letters followed by ten numbers 3.
USCIS lists EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC and IOE as examples 3. It doesn’t say what each code stands for, so skip blog posts that claim to know. You don’t need them to track a case.

How do the received date, notice date and priority date differ?
The is the day your request reached the USCIS lockbox, or for online filing, the day you signed and paid 5. It is your filing date for deadlines 56.
The notice date is the date on the letter. The Policy Manual names the received date, not the notice date, as the filing date 5.
The matters mostly for immigrant visa petitions. Sometimes the received date becomes the priority date, which decides when the beneficiary can file for a green card 5.
What if something on the notice is wrong?
Check every name, date of birth, number and the form or category. A small mistake on a receipt can cause trouble later.
If a notice has a typo that is USCIS’s mistake, USCIS says you may send a Typographic Error request online 14.

Which I-797 is this?
The I-797 is a family of notices. The letter after the 797 tells you the job 1.

- I-797

- I-797B

If yours is an I-797E, it is a request for evidence. See our main guide: Got a request for evidence from USCIS? Here’s what it means.
So the difference between an I-797C and an I-797A is that the A replaces your I-94 and the C is a receipt or message 12.
What do you do next after an I-797C notice of action?
Reasons for a rejection include an incomplete form, a missing signature, an old edition of the form, or the wrong fee 5.
A rejected filing has no filing date. A corrected refiling is treated as new 56.
Missing a required biometrics appointment or interview, without an excusing request, can lead USCIS to deny the case as abandoned 68. If you are within 12 hours or have missed it, call the Contact Center 8.

Can an I-797C prove you can work?
For most work permit renewals filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025, no. USCIS says that receipt will state it is not evidence of employment authorization 10.
Work permit renewal filed on

Example only. It is not about your own case.
Filed before Oct. 30, 2025
A work permit that looks expired, shown with an I-797C for a timely filed renewal, is treated as unexpired for up to 540 days 1112
Filed on or after Oct. 30, 2025
For most renewals, the receipt states it is not evidence of employment authorization 10
Limited exceptions exist, including extensions provided by law and TPS-related notices in the Federal Register 911
On Oct. 29, 2025, DHS announced it was ending automatic extensions for people who renew their work permits on or after Oct. 30, 2025 9. A Federal Register final rule, published and effective Oct. 14, 2026, adopts that earlier rule without changes 11.
The rule doesn’t affect permits that were automatically extended before Oct. 30, 2025 9. There are limited exceptions, including extensions provided by law and TPS-related notices in the Federal Register 911.
For renewals filed before that date, a work permit that looks expired, shown with an I-797C for a timely filed renewal, is treated as unexpired for up to 540 days 1112.
These rules changed recently. Check USCIS’s employer handbook for your category before you talk to an employer 12.
When should you talk to a lawyer?
Consider it if your filing was rejected, the notice has a mistake you can’t fix, a deadline is close, or your work permit is about to expire.
Only three kinds of people can represent you: a lawyer in good standing, an accredited representative at a recognized organization, or a supervised law student or graduate 13.

A supervised law student or graduate

Immigration is federal, so these rules are the same in every state 6. Be careful with a “notario.” In the U.S. that means a notary, not a lawyer 13.
Bring the notice, your filing and any mail from USCIS. It makes a short call go further.
